Posted on Thursday, August 26, 2021

Supporters cheer during a football game.

There will be a lot of fresh faces on the sidelines of Panther athletics this year with several new coaches joining the LC team.

Terlynn Olds, Director of Athletics and Recreation, started her job in June. She said she is excited for the future of the program.

“We have a great mix of experienced coaches and very talented newcomers,” she said. “Everyone is energized and ready to start the year.”

Fans will be able to meet coaches and players at Saturday’s Panther Pride Festival, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot at Callaway Auditorium. After they check out food trucks, games and arts and crafts vendors, they can watch the Team Pres vs. Team AD intersquad football game that will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Shannon Lipham, the new Head Golf Coach and Assistant Director of Athletics, will be a familiar face to many. He is returning to LC for the third time after serving as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball program during the 2009-10 season and golf team in 2002-03. That season, the Panther golf team was named United States Collegiate Athletic Association national champions.

A member of the Golf Coaches Association of America, Lipham most recently was director of golf at Point University, as well as general manager at Point University Golf Club in Lanett, Alabama.

Other coaching positions include director of instruction at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia; head men’s and women’s golf coach at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia; and assistant coach for the men’s and women’s golf teams at Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia. He also coached at his alma mater, Troup County High School.

Melanie Rushing, Associate Director of Athletics and Softball Head Coach, comes to LaGrange after a four-year coaching sabbatical during which she founded Mental Sweet Spot, a company that helps softball coaches and teams train the mental component to win more games and have more fun.

Her recent experience includes producing a successful podcast with more than 100,000 downloads; running virtual bootcamps; helping coaches build an actionable blueprint for their team culture; creating resources and working with coaches to develop confident, mentally tough teams; and creating curriculum for player mental training programs.

Rushing previously served as head softball coach, event manager and sport psychology professor at Kalamazoo College in Michigan. In her first season, her team attained its highest conference finish in 15 years. The group set single-season team records in batting average, runs, hits, home runs and stolen bases. By her third year, the squad achieved the second-most wins in program history.

Prior to Kalamazoo, Rushing was a graduate assistant coach at Jacksonville University in Florida. Before that, she served as an instructor and coach at HitStreak Fastpitch in Colorado. She also assisted programs at University of Redlands and California State University, San Bernardino.

Kiwanis-gift.jpg

The Kiwanis Club of LaGrange recently presented President Susanna Baxter with a check for $13,000 for the Jack Tate Kiwanis Endowed Scholarship. The grant was established to honor James W. “Jack” Tate, a member of the club for almost 40 years. A local businessman and strong supporter of education, Tate has been the longtime leader of the club’s scholarship program that has provided thousands of dollars to local high school students, enabling them to attend the college of their choice. The club’s gift, which brings the fund to $25,000, will allow the scholarship to be awarded next academic year.
